How to have flawless skin this winter

Because acne is real!

So most people know by now that I’ve been through hell and back the last couple of months. The results = REALLY BAD SKIN.

I used to be that girl who can rock up at work without wearing a drop of foundation, but life happens and when the going gets tough even the tough gets pimples.

Why? Stress releases cortisol, which can really mess with your hormones in your body resulting in breakouts on your face.

Tina from Symbiotic Communications (in true fairy godmother style) sent me the Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Range (and without sounding like a cheap TV ad), the results are really effective – I haven’t been wearing foundation the last 3 days, because my skin looks clean, clear and carefree.

Eucerin DermoPURIFYER is a range of effective dermo cosmetic solutions for ‘not perfect’ skin focusing on the the following factors of problem skin*

  • hyperkeratosis (disrupted skin cell shedding)
  • seborrhea (increased sebum production)
  • microbial colonisation (increased bacteria proliferation)
  • inflammation of the skin

I’ve been using the following products for the last 6 weeks now:

Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Cleanser (R229.99)  is a soap-free and fragrance-free formula for gentle, yet effective, cleaning. So, my husband and I literally had fights over this product. Luckily the product is also available in a 400ml Value Pack – because sharing is caring, people! It contains 6% Ampho-tensides meaning it removes all excess make up.

I use the Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Scrub (R139.99 for 100ml) two times a week. It’s a gentle oil-free formula and won’t dry out the skin at all.

Gosh, I love a good toner! I apply Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Toner (R139.99 for 200ml) daily as part of my skincare  routine. Its anti-bacterial formula contains 2% Lactic Acid active system which gently unclogs pores without overdrying.

Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Active Concentrate (R189.99 for 30ml) is a very light, fast-absorbing emulsion and assists with overall better looking skin. It leaves you with a healthy glow which I absolutely love.

Bedtime beauty! Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Active Night Care (R189.99 for 50ml) is a highly effective oil-free formula also containing Lactic Acid.

Twinning on trend

Because you can’t out-twin your twin!

She’s Audrey Hepburn and I’m Coco Chanel. She laughs like Serena van der Woodsen and I’ll give you a resting-bitch-face like Blair Waldorf.

Together we’re fierce yet feminine, completely crazy although we know exactly what we want and when we want it.

(Two skinny cappuccinos, please!)

She’s the foodie although I can’t say no to a slice of caramel cheesecake and dusty pink macarons. I’m the fashionista although she’s always dressed to perfection wearing her Tiffany bracelet.

What I love the most about our friendship is the fact that we can just be us when we’re together. We chase the same over-the-top life goals a lot of people are too afraid to do. We love our personal space and aren’t afraid to admit it. We hate birthdays and we’ll never answer the phone if it’s not work related.

We can quote Walt Disney movies, rap like we’re part of Jenny from the Block’s squad and when we have a laugh-attack (yes, it’s a thing!) there’s nothing you can do about it… or maybe to pretend you don’t know us.

What I love the most about our friendship is the fact that we are so much alike – it’s almost freaky. We’ll say the same things at the same time or laugh at the same inside-joke without telling each other.

We go through the same life situations at the same times and when she’s sad, I’m normally sad too… eating a chocolate slab… on my own… with Smarties.

I’m only three weeks older, but strangely enough I was born three weeks too early. Go figure!

We decided to a twinning styled shoot in collaboration with POETRY. We chose these beautiful pink floral print garments which really represent our personalities.

Hope you like it as much as we did taking the photos.

Always, Anne

How to ignore the bullies

A woman can never be to classy, too caring or too pink… well that’s according to me anyways.

I get judged on my appearance… a lot. Too much.

I love pretty dresses, glitter donuts, (sometimes) think that I am a princess married to my prince and if it’s pink, I’ll take two.

Because I’m marked by so-called society as “cute” and “girly,” people are so easy to judge me. My fellow fashionistas, I’m sure you’ve hard some of these before:

  • You’re such a snob.
  • Looks are so important to you.
  • You’re just in this industry for the glamour and freebies.
  • You think you’re better than us.
  • Just another pretty face.
  • You are so selfish….

And my favourite – she’s so lucky!

(No, I just studied for four years and worked my butt off for five  while paying back my student loan with massive interest. Still paying though. With interest.)

I say screw this, be you no matter who you choose to be. Just be you.

Appearance doesn’t matter. Size doesn’t matter. Your relationship status doesn’t matter and your background doesn’t matter either. All you should really care about are your morals and beliefs.

Don’t settle for second best.

Don’t be that girl who makes comments about other girls’ weight.

Don’t think you’re better than someone, because of your job status, your outfit or your haircut.

Treat the CEO and the homeless man on the street with the same respect.

Life’s short. Don’t hate.

Don’t hate on people who you think are better off, because everybody have 24 hours in a day and it really depends on you what you are going to do with that.

That Fashion Editor – she might be bipolar. That woman who just got a promotion – she might secretly suffer from major depression. That girl with the perfect body – she might just be exercising and eating healthy.

Nothing in life comes easy. It’s 10% luck, 40% hard work and 40% being nice to other people, trust me on this one.

I am sorry for always preaching, but I can’t stand bullying in the workplace and even amongst friends. It’s something that needs more attention, because it seems to me that bullying changed from mocking the ”fat kid” to trying to break down successful (and happy) women living their best lives.

Stop hating and start supporting – it’s worth it!

If you are being bullied or judged for being you, I would love to hear from you! Send me an email at and let’s end this.

There’s nothing more beautiful than women supporting women.

Always, Anne.

Put on you ‘big girl’ shorts

Hold your horsey!

There’s two things in life I’m really scared of – horses and wearing short shorts! Okay, three if you count the fact that I can’t light a fire match to save my life…

YOLO (you only live once) has been my motto for the whole 0f 2016 and I’ve done some crazy things like running a half marathon, moving to the city, starting my own blog, taking up adult “absolute beginners” ballet just to name a few.

Still, nothing freaks me out more than putting my lady thighs in summer’s worst trend ever for curvy girls – short shorts! I’m also really scared to be around horses, so why not plan a styled shoot overcoming both fears? #WINNING

I booked a trainer for an hour and at first I stood a few metres away, but he gave me pills to feed the horses with and within in a few minutes I actually started to enjoy the whole new scenario.

I got to meet the cutest little horse (with some mental issues I have to add) named Prince who is the most photogenic horse I’ve ever met and we took some great photos together.

If you notice that I’m just giving a small grin, that’s because I was scared AF.

After the shoot I just wanted to buy a horse but then Instagram Husband reminded met that we don’t have space for a horse in our one-bedroom-apartment… But I did go out and bought some fabulous pair of short shorts for summer.

Because hips and all, I’ll going to have the best summer ever.

Yes, that’s a thing.

Always, Anne

Life is better when you’re ‘brunching’

Because it is the best meal of the day!

My name is Annette and I’m a brunchaholic! Boom.

I’d choose a late breakfast with friends any day over late night clubbing. I don’t know if it’s an age thing (27 is not that old!) but nothing beats the smell of a skinny cappuccino and crispy bacon on a Saturday morning after an intense week of deadlines at work.

One of the perks of being a Capetonian is the fact that you are overflooded with amazing brunch spots from wine farms to oceans views to super chic city vibes – the options are endless!

What I love even more about Cape Town fashion is that you can wear your gym wear as day wear and rock the athleisure trend like a babe. Totally why I am obsessed with Cotton On‘s fitness inspired collections! Comfy yet super stylish. #OnFleek

Always, Anne

My type of bucket list

You know all those things you’ve wanted to do, you should go do them!

You know all those “if only” conversations you have with yourself – If only I could run a 10km race or if only I could get a better job… if only you would do something about it! Life is way too short to not live in the moment and turn all your can’ts into cans.

At University my goal was to work for a glossy magazine – end of discussion. And marry Chuck Bass. Yes, I was twenty-one and highly aware of the fact that he was a fictional character, but I’ve always (still?) thought I would make the perfect Blair Waldorf living in the Upper East Side. I even dated a guy once that looked like Chuck Bass only because he looked like Chuck Bass, but that’s a blog post for another day. Fetish much?

Anyway, I met my husband and I ‘chucked’ my obsession with Mr Bass right out of the front door.

(Okay, let’s get back to the point)

Number one on my dream bucket list is sitting front row at Paris Fashion Week with my black Chanel 2.55 handbag between Blake Lively and Alexa Chung. I’ve always pictured myself chatting to Anna Wintour, but I think know I will break out in the world’s biggest sweat and collapse out of starstruck on her limited edition of Louboutins.

I also have my short term bucket list which consists of smaller and short-term goals like running my second half marathon next month, spend more time on my blog, plan a trip to Europe with my husband and show any (ANY!) sign of a six pack.

Putting together to-do lists and goals for yourself are fun and inspiring. Everything don’t need to be realistic. The fact that I also want to be a pop star in Japan in my next life doesn’t make me weird… or does it!?

Laughing like a lady

Always Anne fashion blog

A wise lady once said ‘I’m done with this negativity’ and she lived happily ever after.

Lately there have been a lot of new yet exciting changes happening in my life. But with change comes stress and with stress comes more stress….

While settling into a new job as Fashion & Beauty Editor for one of South Africa’s largest online sites is a dream come true, I have very high expectations to meet.

I’ve also been given more digital strategizing responsibilities which the nerd in me loves to do, but it’s been tough getting in the habit of doing regular in-depth reports and analysing social media statistics.

For a few weeks I have been out of the gym, eating all the wrong foods and skipping my normal make up routine because I have to wake up at 5 to skip the traffic and adjusting in a new work place does not happen overnight.

But then I decided to just completely start giving a damn about any negative thoughts!

Oh my gosh, I have so many things to be thankful for with so many opportunities waiting for me. I get to work in the most beautiful city doing what I’ve always dreamt of doing. I love my job, my editor, trying out a new coffee shop for lunch every single day… so really, what do I have to complain about?

You can’t expect everything on a rose gold platter. With every new chapter there will be ups and downs and it’s up to YOU how you are going to deal with it.

I choose to laugh. A lot – because I see the bigger picture and that really is the ‘bigger picture’.

So, what about my slacking at the gym? I signed up to do my second half marathon next month, because why not?

Always, Anne

Small town girl

Growing up on a farm taught me a lot of things.

“Just a small town girl…”

My brother and I was fortunate to grow up on a farm with so much exploring to do. Every day.

We (yes, him included) played with my barbies in the mud, discovered our own little hiking trails in the farm’s beautiful mountains and spend most afternoons on our bicycles looking for new adventures.

I had no idea what the freeway was and that it even existed! #SHOCKINGBUTTRUE

Although I was quite the tomboy, I lived for family events over weekends when my mom dressed me up in the most adorable dresses with an overload of bows and sparkle.

We hardly ever went to the city and on the rare occasion it happened, my brother and I would always stare at all the city lights and dream about one day…

Being from the countryside taught me to always be humble and treat everyone with respect and most importantly, you have to work hard if you want to make something out of your life. There’s no other way around it.

People are always shocked when I tell them where I am from and how I actually love spending time outdoors. It’s just who I am.

Never judge a book by its cover. Pick it up and read the first chapter at least.

Always, Anne
